Simply Vera
A lot of people show interest in growing aloe vera plants in their backyards not only because commercially prepared products like the aloe juice is a bit pricey but because the plant has many uses and medicinal benefits. The plant is known for its healing and soothing properties. I personally use the gel to treat insect bites and in a few seconds, the itch goes away.
The plant is vase-shaped and spread by shallow roots. Although it seldom blooms as a houseplant, when it is grown outdoors or in a properly ventilated green house, it can produce tall stalks of one inch long green, white, yellow or orange flowers.
Aloe vera plants are suited best in a very well drained potting mix that contains sand, perlite, pumice or sharp grit. If you would like an indoor setting, place the plant where it can receive bright light. If you would like it to move outdoors during the summer, do so gradually by placing it first in dappled light. When we say dappled light, we simply mean speckled or spotted. Keep in mind that the plant cannot stand any frost. You can help your plants adjust to indoor conditions by bringing it inside before nights get cool in fall. For outdoors, the plant can grow in full sun to partial shade. Another important thing to remember is that the soil should be moderately fertile and fast draining.
During the winter, aloe vera plants become quiescent and they utilize very little moisture so watering should be minimal. Let the soil become completely dry before giving the plants a cup or two of water. During the summer months, it should be the opposite and by that we mean the soil should be totally soaked. Wait of the soil to dry though before re-watering.
The plant is propagated by removing the offsets that are produced around the base of the mature ones. You can also grow them from seeds if you wish to.
