In gemological parlance, chatoyancy refers to an optical effect (a reflectance of sorts), which is seen in a few natural gemstones. When a chatoyant chrysoberyl is cut with a cabochon (domed surface), it displays a streak of light running length wise from each of the stones end. Such stones are known as cymophane or cat’s eye chrysoberyl. Normally, cat’s eye gemstones are formed in scapolite, corundum, spinel, tourmaline and quartz.

Found mostly in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and Brazil, this gemstone displays chatoyancy in yellow, white, greenish yellow, grayish green. With a hardness of 8.5 on the Moh’s scale, and smoothness like glass, this is definitely a gemstone of great looks and strength. However, you need to look out for cat’s eye stones with a spot in the crystal, stains, pale color, cracks or holes. With a cat’s eye in hand, you can see a silver lining under direct sun or lamp light. The cat’s eye effect can be seen in a number of other gemstones including emerald, aquamarine, tanzanite and scapolite.

Cat’s eye is believed to make the wearer wealthy and happiness in matters related to children too. Being a quick acting gemstone, it is always advisable to use the cat’s eye after a trial. Also, users need to be wary of dull stones, which could signify bad health or spotted stones, which signify enemy trouble. It is also believed to enhance stamina, radiance and happiness. In the field of medicine, it is widely used to treat joint pain, anxiety and skin diseases too. In Vedic astrology, this gemstone is linked to the planet Ketu.

Go to www.firemountaingems.com and look around for the link to their “EncycloBEADia” to find out about identifying different stones. It’s very helpful. I’ve also gotten some good books from my local public library. Of course, I had to return them; when you find one you like, you can usually find it online for sale.
