Beautiful Silver

Already well known in the antiquities – for the romans it was earrings made of gold and sometimes incrusted with perls that were in, while silver was preferred by the Greeks – earrings are always in fashion. But to be really top of the fashion charts today you must sport a diamond on your lobe.

Here is a little history on the most ancient earrings in the world.

The most ancient earring in the world, since archeologists only found one, was found in the Bulgarian village of Hotnitza. It weighs 4 grams and is estimated to date back to 7000 BCE, that is about 2000 years earlier than previously found jewels in the same area. It is not yet known who were wearing this earring.

There are also other jewels that can boast of such ancient origins. For example jade earrings have been found in Mongolia and those are thought to be between 7500 and 8200 years old.

Silver earrings endure throughout the ages. In an around the year 200 AD (CE), riche and well known Greek women would decorate their lobes with silver hoops, reminiscent of the creole fashion that we all love. Sometimes these would include precious stones like rubies or sapphires.

But they were not the only ones, Egyptian and Aztecs women would wear beautiful silver on their ears. Today, silver is still a favorite for women around the world, and I am happy to report it is much more affordable today than it used to be back then.

If most of us appreciate the low cost of silver, some women still look for the most expensive earrings in the world. Of course those can be found in Hollywood’s, preferred jeweler to the stars, Harry Winston’s store.
