How do you tell the difference between glass and crystal?
I Have a glass or crystal jewelry box and I was trying to figure out if it was glass or crystal, but I am not sure how to tell the difference. Any tips would be great.
One source of confusion is that some types of glass are referred to as crystal (as in lead crystal) but they are not really crystal.
True crystals have their atoms arranged in regular rows while the atoms in glass are random.
If you shatter a crystal you will see that pieces have flat surfaces. If you shatter glass the pieces have curved surfaces.
I doubt that you want to perform that test on your box.
Scientists examine crystals by subjecting them to x-rays which form regular patterns that come from the regular arrangement of atoms. The same test on glass would not form such patterns.
Again I doubt that you would want to go to that trouble.
Going back to the first statement. The question probably is, “Is the box made out of ordinary glass or is it “lead crystal” glass.
Every form of glass has a unique refractive index which is a measure of how much it bends light. Measuring this might not be easy on glass that is forming a jewelry box.
Perhaps a jeweler or antiques expert could tell the difference.
