What are Swarovski Crystallized Elements

It’s been said that “the world’s most prestigious events sparkle in Crystallized Swarovski Elements.”

True enough, when supermodels and Hollywood beauties such as Kirsten Dunst, Jessica Alba and Kate Beckinsale all shine on the red carpet. And designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Marquesa, Belmar and Chanel light up the world party circuit with beautiful Crystallized Swarovski Elements.

Founded in 1895, the company that bears his family name was created to use Daniel Swarovski’s expertise at glass-cutting, including the innovative electric glass-cutting machine he invented and patented 3 years before.

It was this glass-cutting process that introduced a distinct level of brilliance to the jewel-like crystal components that appear on countless items of fashion, jewellery, accessories and interior pieces. But there’s more to it than that, especially after years of refinements… and competitors trying to upstage the renowned finery of Swarovski AG.

Creating a crystal that allows light to refract in a rainbow spectrum, Swarovski coats some of its crystals with special metallic chemical coatings. For example, one of the most popular coatings is “Aurora Borealis”, or “AB”, which gives the surface a rainbow-hued “oil slick” appearance.

Other colours and coatings are always being developed and added to the collection. As well, unique (and copyrighted) jewel cuts like Xilion (released in 2004) have been designed to optimise the brilliance of Roses (crystal components with flat backs) and Chatons (diamond cut).

What is meant by the “cut” of a nonlinear crystal such as KD*P?

KD*P is a type of nonlinear crystal its chemical name is Potassium Dideuterium Phosphate.

I guess (though I am not familiar with the context) that it means the angle of cut with respect to the preferred direction of polarisation in the material (KDP being, as I am sure you know, a well-known ferroelectric crystal).
