A buyer’s guide to alarm clocks

1. Analog or digital: These days, more people opt for digital alarm clocks as they can be seen quite clearly at night. These models also allow for more precise setting of time. On the other hand, analog alarm clocks tend to be more precise as they do not make use of buttons for setting time. But, some models of analog clocks tick or hum too loudly. These are undesirable for obvious reasons.

2. Size: Alarm clocks come in various sizes from small to medium and large. Small clocks are generally meant for travel. However, small alarm clocks make it more difficult to see the time. On the other hand, large alarm clocks are difficult to carry. You must choose the size of the clock according to your requirements.

3. Design: Alarm clocks come in a wide variety of styles. From the classic to modern and funky – the designs are breathtaking, to say the least. There are special alarm clocks for kids that look attractive and make waking up a joy. The alarm clock that looks and rings like an egg is an example.

4. Power source: Most modern alarm clocks derive power from a battery. But, battery backup may not be available in antique pieces. Battery backup ensures that the clock does not run slowly in case of a power outage. This means that the alarm clock will not require frequent time adjustments, thus limiting the wear and tear of parts.

5. Snooze: The snooze or drowse feature is an extremely important one. This turns off the alarm for a few seconds/minutes before the alarm starts ringing again. A separate button has to be pushed if you desire to turn off the alarm altogether. This ensures that the user is properly awake and minimizes the chance of them going back to sleep again.

6. Wake time: Some alarms allow different settings for different days of the week. Some clocks even allow two different wake times for the same day. Such clocks are useful for people who need them as a part of their lifestyle. Quite naturally, these alarm clocks are more expensive.

7. Tunes: Different alarm clocks have different sounds. Some are shrill and loud while others are soft yet persistent. Some alarm clocks allow you to play your favorite song as your wake up call, while others connect to the radio.
