Gold filled jewellery, also known as rolled-gold is made by binding the base metal that is usually a brass or copper, between two layers of gold. It is then thinned down to appropriate thickness as needed by running it through a roller unit. It has become popular among the common masses because it is affordable when compared to gold, which has its price soaring to very high levels.

This jewellery is identified with the ‘GF’ marking, which is given to the jewellery when it satisfies a few basic requirements such as the outer gold should be a minimum of 10K; the outer gold should weigh 5% of the final item and should be permanently bound to the base material. The most commonly found stamping on the these items are 1/20 12kt GF and 1/20 14kt GF. Double-clad jewellery, which has half the thickness, is expensive when compared to the single-clad jewellery.

As salt water, soap and perspiration act harmful on the metal, they should not be exposed to any of them. Also, you should not go swimming while wearing the jewellery, as chlorine in swimming pools may corrupt it.

People of today prefer to wear this filled jewellery to gold jewellery. The reason is that it is economical and looks as alluring as the jewellery made of pure gold.
