We all require some form of vision correction at some point in our lives. Even if you have perfect vision as a young adult, or had your vision corrected with Lasik surgery.

The biggest refractive error that effects everybody is called presbyopia. If presbyopia has gotten to you, you already know about it. It’s the reason you have to hold magazines and newspapers far away in order to see them clearly. And why you have to hold the candle close to the dinner menu in order to read it.

Presbyopia is a natural occurrence that is caused by the regular progression and growth of an eye. The changes that occur are inside the eye and truth be told, there is nothing modern science can do to prevent presbyopia.

While presbyopia cannot be prevented, there are ways it can be combated. We all know about reading glasses, bifocal glasses, and bifocal contact lenses. But there is also a new surgery that can help people suffering from presbyopia.

Conductive Keratoplasty, commonly referred to as CK uses low heat radio waves to apply areas on increased curvature to the front surface of the eye. Considered a non-invasive procedure, CK alters the front shape of the cornea to provide clearer near vision for both farsighted eyes and people who have presbyopia. Conductive Keratoplasty is a relativiely low-risk procedure that would need to be repeated as the eye or visual demands change.

Conductive Keratoplasty received FDA approval in 2002, but is still not as widely performed as other refractive surgeries, such as Lasik or PRK that will not correct presbyopia. While the demand for a surgery for presbyopia remains very high, CK is the most promising procedure available to date.

Is it the cure that everyone is looking for? No. But it may improve your reading vision.

How do you clean the rock away from a gemstone?

I went on a cruise to Mexico and got some Mexican Fire Opal and I want to get the rock that surrounds it off.

Determine what the surrounding rock is composed of and try to find a specific solvent for this material, but be very careful, as sometimes the solvent will attack both matrix and gemstone. Fire opal is very soft and easily damaged, so best to not use a solvent at all but rather grind off the surrounding matrix VERY CAREFULLY using hand tools and lots of patience. You can use a high speed sintered diamond burr in a Foredom – type grinder as long as you use a constant cool water drip on your burr during the process. Use safety glasses during this process absolutely..
