“Bring your novel some day. I will read it,” said Professor Gautam Saha. Then he asked my CG. After I told him, he added, “It will be nice to read the perspective of an eight pointer than a five pointer. A five pointer can only talk bad about the system.” It was really nice to hear such things from Professor Saha, one of the best professors in IIT Kharagpur. He did not intend anything bad towards Chetan Bhagat. However, he was not happy with the way the story-tellers twist and turn the real things before publishing on a piece of paper or releasing on the screens of multiplexes so as to suit the taste of the common man.

Professor elaborated his viewpoint, “The film portrays the highest paid actor as the best man on the Earth. He seldom puts a wrong foot. But the real life is far, far different. Nobody is hero and nobody is villain in real life. Life is far more complex. One has to enact several roles in one’s life. Sometimes, one does a heroic job, sometimes very cowardly act and sometimes a very villainous job. The curve of life follows random patterns.”

100% correct. Professor also understood that the fine intricacies of life is too difficult to present in raw form for a producer or a director or a writer. The truth has to be twisted. The matter has to be spiced up. Some sarcasm has to be put. But the actual concern from his side was that people take the sarcasm very seriously when the story becomes a blockbuster. All the good points of the system prove to be too weak against the loads of criticism.

A criticism can be entertained if it comes in a healthy way. It should follow the appreciation. It should not just complete itself and leave traces of appreciation behind itself. This path is really applicable when we are talking of something as great as the IIT system.

The second point of wisdom was the nature of human life. Our life is full of caricatures. Caricatures of joys of bonhomie, sorrows of hatred, shame of cowardice, thrills of adventure, spills of invigilance and so on. Recently I saw a video of a lecture by Devdutt Pattanaik on East vs. West–the myths that mystify. He showed two extremes as far as the pattern of life is concerned. One was a Gymnosophist, who was only engaged in meditation trying to reach nothingness. Other was Alexander, the Great, who was only engaged in conquering the whole world.

Life had different meanings for both of them. For Alexander, the life was an opportunity to do something spectacular. For the Gymnosophist, life was to understand the meanings of infinity and nothingness. For those two fellows, life was more or less tracing similar paths everyday. I suppose that Alexander, the Great and the Gymnosophist, both might disagree over it, but for me, the life of both those fellows was very mundane routine. It was not an easy job either to conquer the world or to reach nothingness, but the pattern of activity was unidirectional.

But alas, life is no more such monotonous humdinger now. Even a beggar, if he gathers the resources, can come up with a beautiful story which showcases the various challenges of his life. The gymnosophists have converted themselves to Television babas who have a lot of stories to reveal, if they like. The population of people who just throw pebbles into pond all their life is extinct. Life is a complex business. A book or a film tries to simplify it and earn revenues. We will really be very happy if we find more books and more film DVDs in the other cupboard meant for the ones unsoiled by the tint of commercialisation.
