Antique Bracelets – Be Fashionably Old This Season

Being old fashioned is no longer the taboo it once was, thanks to the demand for antique jewellery. The more you turn back the clock, the more “in” your sartorial sense is assumed to be. Fashion watchers have always talked about a cycle in fashion – trends never really go permanently out of style, they are simply recycled. Take the case of bell bottom trousers, denim jackets, tote bags, pencil heels, and now, jewellery that is designed on the lines of Victorian, Renaissance, and even Egyptian pharaonic dynasty items.

But we are talking about the real thing – antique jewellery, not jewelry made to imitate old styles. Antique bracelets are a good accessory to dangle on your arm this summer – their graceful lines, skilled workmanship, and “antique” tag is bound to grab eyeballs.

Understanding Antique Jewellery

There are two aspects to antique bracelets: age and country of origin. Depending on these two, the styles, designs, and motifs will vary. The problem with buying antique jewellery is that you may not know all the options you have. To understand the range of historical bracelets available for buyers, they need to understand cultural norms, styles, and symbolic meaning behind bracelet design when they were crafted.

For example, you may feel that antique bracelets from Russia featuring birds is something only a teenager would wear; but the fact is that birds in Russia are seen as symbols of love and stability. So it won’t be inappropriate to wear them at a relaxed lunch with friends or on a date.

What kind of gemstone is this?

I went on vacation a couple years ago and had a necklace made from a gem I found. (By found, I mean they gave me a bucket full of mud, average rocks, and gems, and I got to sift through it to find unpolished gems.) They told me it was jasper. It is an oval-shaped pendant without a back. When holding it against a dark surface it appears to be a very dark green and slightly blue color, with strings of white. When you hold it up to a bright light, the gem is completely see through at parts and looks like some sort of dark green and white moss that has been preserved in a clear resin. Is this jasper? None of the pictures I’ve seen look like it. Thank you.

The stone in your picture is known as Moss Agate. It is a crypto-crystalline variety of quartz. The green “moss” inside it is, in fact, not plant material at all but can be composed of various minerals including chlorite and some manganese compounds. It is not particularly rare but is very pretty and each stone is unique as the patterns are never the same in any two stones.
