Jeweler Loupe
With so many different types of jewelers loupes available, it can be difficult choosing the perfect one for your application. They can range in magnification power, size and quality. Some magnify objects one times greater than the naked eye and others magnify as much as 30 times greater than the naked eye. There are a few common magnification levels and each one has its own use.
Which one should you use? Here are the most common ones.
- A 10x loupe will magnify objects 10 times. These are great for looking at coins. You can easily locate mint marks and determine a coin’s condition. They also make the perfect first jeweler’s loupe.
- A 20x loupe will magnify objects 20 times. These are also a great for looking at coins. You can also use them to identify hallmarks on jewelry. Is that gold ring 10 karat, 14 karat or 18 karat?
- A 30x loupe will maginfy objects 30 times. These are perfect for looking at diamonds and other precious gems. If there are any flaws you will see them with a 30x loupe.
If you are like me, then getting all three makes perfect sense. Luckily you can get a set of jewelers loupes that will usually consist of the most common magnification levels. There are some that have only one or two and there are some that have as many as six in the set. The best thing about these sets would have to be the price. Some sets cost less than a single loupe. Do what I did and pick up a set.

Diamond is ten (plus) years old!?
Is there a number inscribed in it? (I forgot what it is called, you use the 30X Loupe to see the identification number) If the diamond is 10 plus years old should we expect to find the number in it?
If not, can jewelers put one in it?
It should have a serial number (I’m not sure what they’re called exactly, either) on it, but it might not. Did you buy it with a certificate?
My grandmother had a set of 16 stones that were bought together, all but one have a serial number for some reason. And if you look at them together you can definitely tell that that one doesn’t shine as brightly and has a yellow tint to it, but we’ve been told it’s authentic.
If no one else can answer your question I’ll try to look up if the jewelery can put one on, but I don’t think they can since they don’t know where it came from.
