Does my saxophone have mother of pearl keys?
I just got a new saxophone (YAS-575 Allegro line) about a week ago and was curious if the key stones are faux or if they are real mother of pearl keys. Does anybody know how I could tell the difference between the two?
I know that when I scratch the keys on my YTS-82Z, which does have real mother of pearl keys, that the scratch will show up, and feel almost chalkboard like. On my student tenor, which probably doesn’t have the real thing, my nail slides right over. This is a fairly accurate way to tell.
The 575 is in between Yamaha’s intermediate and pro sax lines, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it did have the real thing. There isn’t any information about the keys I can find online, because there isn’t much info about it at all.
If you really wanted to know for sure, you could try contacting Yamaha, but frankly, it doesn’t matter. Nobody sees the finger buttons when you play, and the fake pearls look almost as good as the real thing.
