Epic games involving dragons, wizards, demons and warriors never really old, do they? The first entry in the Lunar series – a game that mixed all the aforementioned elements leaking – has seen a lot of love over the past few decades. After making his big debut on the Sega CD in the early ’90s, it quickly grew to become one of the best-selling games for the system. It has already been remade a handful of times for various consoles since then, but many years have passed since we last had a chance to take a huge knife and chase the magical emperor, while striving to become a world-renowned Dragon Master. Game Arts and XSeed as fit to change it by lavishing the original adventure with Cartloads of TLC. Actually Lunar: Silver Star Harmony on the PSP is remake to the top all the Lunar remakes.

At this point the Lunar story has been told many times and in slightly different ways. It follows a young boy named Alex, who dreams of one day becoming a great and noble warrior like his legendary idol Dragon Master Dyne, who mysteriously disappeared years before. In his absence, has a growing darkness spread and begun to flourish. It is in this uncertain time for the naive Alex brings together a bunch of friends and embark on a carefree, adventurous excursion beyond safe limits of their local village. Marching straight into the path of danger, they soon find themselves faced with keeping the world from falling into evil hands. Silver Star Harmony is faithful to the original excellent story while offering extra scenes and interaction, shedding more light on the history and connections between characters. A new prologue sequence that provides important background story is one of the many bonus scenes scattered throughout the game. If you are a beginner, these vignettes certainly help round out the story nicely, but series fans will really appreciate the expanded plot.
Anyone who played one of the earlier versions will be blown away by how much the new graphical makeover improves the experience. While you will still find the same anime cutscenes from previous remakes argued that all the game’s graphics are completely redone with crispy hand-drawn 2D graphics. The new isometric city design is very smooth. Your party members and the many opponents, they are all infused with lively animations that give them a life of their own. The many different enemies you encounter are strikingly designed and unusually creative. You go up against everything from furry elf-yetis with pointy ears and blobs of transparent slime, which contains a bug-eyed fish creature come to tentacle-adorned mermaid beasts that vomit poisonous purple goop out of their dual purpose foot / eye sockets. The game’s bestiary remains one of the strangest around.
It is almost impossible to avoid the inevitable level grinding, which sets in with most role-making and Silver Star Harmony not run from his old-school perceptions in this regard. There are only so many times you can effectively dodge around wandering monsters, as you sneak around the dungeon areas because they again each time you exit and enter an area – something we often do in some areas. The good news is the game compensates this traditionally bland element with a smart and flexible turn-based combat system that allows you to exercise a broad range of control depending on the situation. If you choose, you can handpick the actions of your character in your party round-by-round, instructing them to attack, use, whip out magic, or deliver superpowerful special abilities with the cool Arts system borrowed from Lunar Legend. A greater degree of retail management is a necessity in tough boss fights that require attention and constantly changing tactics. But when you try to level up or just plowing through areas that are bloated with creatures that must be addressed in order to continue, you can kick the artificial intelligence into overdrive to individual characters or the whole lot and just press the same button every round of engaging what preset behaviors you have selected. This dulls much of the sting out of churning through some of the more repetitive battles.

Silver Star Harmony’s expansive plot sends you gallivanting around various regions of the world where you encounter a remarkable proliferation of oddball towns and communities to explore. In between dungeon crawls and walks through monster-infested terrain, the city districts to provide new equipment, and often contains traces are necessary to progress the story. These bustling hubs of activity are also filled with citizens to talk to and interesting corners to explore. The game’s many non-player character interactions are especially entertaining at times, because people seem too eager to bend your ear about the most random and obscure stuff that crosses their minds. Go into someone’s home and beat him or her up for more info yields some surprising and often humorous dialogue. Besides lots of amusing text-based conversation, the game is packed with some excellent sound. The voice work sometimes alternates between being really well made and is really annoying, but it fits well with the characters and animated scenes. Moreover, the quality original score has been remastered for PSP, and sprinkled with brand new tunes.
Lunar’s debut had a great personality who has successfully shone through in the previous remakes. Fans can be sure that tradition continues on strong in this refined and tightly honed PSP revival of the classic. Not only is everything that made the original such an exciting adventure travel initially still intact, but it is also significantly enhanced and improved through all the new changes found in this definitive remake. Lunar: Silver Star Harmony works well on many levels. As such, it is a real treat for your RPG sweet tooth.
