You see advertisements everywhere for solid gold jewelry at phenomenally low prices. The term solid gold conjures up visions of top quality 18k gold but have you ever wondered how so much gold jewelry can be sold at such low prices?
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulates the manner in which gold jewelry is described and sold. FTC regulations state that the term ‘gold’ cannot be used to describe any jewelry piece that, “…contains a hollow center or interior…” unless the hollow construction of the piece is disclosed in immediate proximity to the term ‘gold,’ and that such jewelry products cannot be described or marked as ‘solid gold.’
Though the FTC does not specifically define what ‘solid gold’ is, it definitely defines what it isn’t – it’s not hollow construction. It goes to follow, then, that any jewelry piece 10k or greater in fineness, that does not employ hollow construction techniques, is, in fact, ‘solid.’
Though the FTC doesn’t exactly come out and state this, jewelry manufacturers have latched on to the interpretation for marketing purposes. And that is how a 10k gold chain, made of an alloy that’s a little over 41% gold, can be marketed as ‘solid gold.’
It’s not necessarily a sneaky marketing technique but it certainly is a clever one. And if you’re not aware of it, you could find yourself purchasing a piece of gold jewelry that’s only 10k gold rather than the 14k or 18k designation that flashed through your head when you heard the term solid gold.
Equipping yourself with basic jewelry knowledge and a nodding acquaintance with jewelry industry vernacular can save you money and disappointment.
