Star Pendant
The Star of David (variously called as the Shield of David or Magen David) is a long-recognized traditional symbol of Jewish identity and Judaism. Formed by the compound shape of two equilateral triangles, it has complex meanings not only in Judaism, but in some esoteric traditions as well. Perhaps the most common non-religious and non-esoteric use of the symbol is in the national flag of the State of Israel. In most cases though, this six-pointed star is associated with everything related to Judaism. It’s little wonder then that a Star of David pendant is chosen by many to symbolize pride in Jewish roots and customs.
Historical records suggest that decorative use of the star preceded its religious and cultural functions. The star was used as a decorative motif since ancient times, but it began to acquire its religious and secular (political) meanings in the 18th century. By the 19th century, the Star of David began to be associated with all Jewish people. Sadly, though there is much pride in its history and richness in its symbolism, the star was also employed by various groups (most notoriously by the Nazis) as an identifying mark to stigmatize Jews.
However, the Star of David is chiefly an emblem of pride nowadays. It figures prominently in Jewish customs, and is the one symbol of Israel that is most likely to be recognized by any foreigner. A Jewish pendant, among many other objects that feature the star, is thus a great way to show Jewish traditions and spiritual connection to the Land of Israel.
Aside from figuring in art and architecture, the Star of David is also incorporated in a variety of Jewelry designs. This jewelry collection includes religious symbols observing the way of life and philosophy of Judaism and Kabbalah such as Magen David, the Menorah, the hand of Miriam (hamsa) and Kabbalah-influenced charms with special prayers and biblical verses, such as Ana Bekoach and Sh’ma Yisrael.
The symmetry and beauty of the star is enough to suggest many design ideas based on the Magen David. Pendant designs featuring the Jewish symbol may be made of precious metals and stones. Gold or silver could be fashioned into the shape of the Shield, which makes for a beautiful piece of jewelry. Aside from pendants, the Symbol can also be molded into stunning earrings.
A relatively new type of Star of David pendant is that made from semi precious stones. Instead of forming the source material into a star (which is difficult if not impossible on stone), the Magen David motif is inscribed directly on the gemstone. This is done by laser-etching and depositing an extremely thin layer of pure gold on the engraving, forming the design.
In all of its variations, any Star of David pendant is sure to evoke a spiritual closeness to Israel and Jewish traditions. The Shield (especially when engraved together with the hamsa) reminds believers of Ps 91:11 – “For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all ways.”
Wearing The Star of David?
I’ve just begun the process of converting from Christianity to Judaism. I spent six months going to temple at least twice a week and meeting with the Rabbi before making this decision. I would like to start wearing a Star of David pendant but I’m wondering if this is appropriate. Should I wait until my year long conversion is complete, or is it alright to star wearing it now.
answer: ask your rabbi, my friend.
Mine advised that those going through conversion NOT wear it until after the final step of conversion because there is so much to learn and others will think you are already Jewish and you may not be able to answer questions about the religion. He also requested that we celebrate Shabbat but not to recite the prayers. Part of the prayer is “because You command us….” and we weren’t Jewish yet and weren’t part of the commands.
Definitely as your rabbi. Perhaps wear it but keep it inside your shirt when in public.
