So you have found the perfect wedding gown but now you have the dilemma of deciding whether or not to wear a veil. This can be very confusing as there are a myriad of wedding veil styles to choose from out there so I have put together this article which will take you through all the options you must think about such as the basic style, colour, length and embellishments. Hopefully when you have finished reading you will have a bit more of an idea as to whether you would like something with a bit of old-style glamour such as a birdcage or vintage veil or something romantic like a mantilla veil or a maybe a more traditional style.

Birdcage veils have been making a big comeback over the last year or so. These are very short veils which cover about half the face – reaching almost to chin level. They are made of wide diamond shape netting and are held in place like a fascinator. They can be adorned with a number of things from feathers and flowers to crystals and pearls. One advantage of these veils is that they can be kept on throughout the day as the veil can be pulled up and fluffed up over your hairstyle.

If you have chosen a vintage or vintage-style wedding gown you will want to get a veil to match. Choosing a vintage wedding veil is a nice option as it can provide you with your “something old” if you are following that particular tradition. Decide which era your gown is and then you can match the veil, whether it’s a 1930′s cap or cloche veil or a 1950s bonnet style. There are many websites that specialize in selling fully restored original, vintage veils or alternatively you can get a modern veil in a vintage style.

Next up is the mantilla veil. This veil has been around for hundreds of years and originated in Spain. It was traditionally made of black Chantilly lace and used as to cover the head at general church services. Today however, white mantilla veils are a popular choice for weddings and communions. It is often circular in shape and is either made completely of lace or it could be made of tulle with a scalloped edge or lace border. These veils are most often worn draped simply over the head so that they lie flat or they can be worn over a Spanish comb called a peineta.

If you have like traditional wedding veil styles then the first thing you need to decide is what length you prefer and whether you want a single or double layer. Veils start at shoulder length, then elbow length, fingertip length, knee length, floor length chapel length and cathedral length. The top layer will be shorter than the bottom layer by several inches if the veil is a shorter length. If it is a long veil then the top layer will probably finish at finger tip level. The length will be heavily influenced by the type of wedding ceremony you are going to have. A grand cathedral length veil, for example, is probably best left to a formal church wedding.

Finally you will have to choose colour and finish. The traditional colours are white, diamond white, ivory and champagne but veils with a hint of colour such as blush pink are also becoming popular. Veils come with different edging such as pencil, ribbon, rhinestone or wired curly edge to name but a few. You will also need to decide whether or not you want the veil embellished with scattered accents. These accents can be Swarovski crystals or diamantes, pearls or a combination of both.
