Should I buy a “gold toned stainless steel” watch?

I saw a nice wristwatch made from “gold toned stainless steel”. I guess this means it doesn’t have much, or any, real gold in it. But I don’t care about that, as long as the gold color doesn’t fade. Can anyone tell me if this type of material will lose its gold color over time? If it does lose color, how long will it take? Also, if it loses color, will there be a stage where it’s like half gold and half silver colored? That would be really awful, lol.

Yes, it will rub off after a couple of years and in the places where it rubs against your skin. Gold “toned” means there is absolutely no gold in it. They just put a thin layer of gold color over it to make it appear gold.

And yes, there will be a stage where it will be half gold and half silver. You will basically just be able to see the silver through the gold in spots. I had a watch that was stainless steel, made by Skagen (very good company) and it had gold-toned accents. Eventually, the gold tone rubbed off the accents. I didn’t care much, however, as I grew out of wearing gold.

Next time, buy a watch with something stronger in it.
