There is a new and exciting metal emerging in the jewelry industry today. This metal is known as palladium and is becoming more popular everyday.
What is Palladium?
There has been a lot of talk about the newest metal in the wedding ring industry; palladium. “What is palladium?” is the first question that comes to mind. Most people only know of platinum, white gold and gold as their wedding ring metal choices. Palladium is the newest white metal being used in the wedding ring industry. Its biggest selling point is that it is just as white as platinum, but its price point is comparable to 14k white gold.
What is the difference between Platinum and Palladium?
Platinum and palladium come from the same family of metals, the Platinum Group of Metals. This means both platinum and palladium share many of the same physical properties. This is why palladium looks and acts just like platinum. In fact, palladium is just as rare as platinum because palladium is only found where there are platinum deposits. This means palladium is actually more rare than gold. There are only a few mines in the world produce palladium. The only difference is palladium is about half the weight of platinum. This means that if you have two identical rings, one made of platinum and one made of palladium, the palladium ring is half the weight. The reason palladium costs less is because there has not been as high a demand for it as there is for platinum. This will change in the future as more and more consumers become aware of palladium as a lower cost alternative to platinum.
What is the difference between White Gold and Palladium?
Believe it or not, there is no such thing as white gold. It is really just an alloy, meaning a mixture of metals, of gold, palladium, nickel and other metals to make gold less yellow in color. After these metals are mixed together the alloy is still not completely white, so Platinum Group Metal called rhodium, is used to plate the ring to make it is as white as palladium. Recent technological breakthroughs in metal working, have allowed jewelry to be made out of almost pure palladium. 14k white gold rings are made of only 55% gold and 18k white gold rings are made of 75% gold. Palladium Wedding Bands are made of 95% pure palladium. The consumer gets more value by purchasing palladium rings because their price is the same as 14k white gold, but the purity level is much higher at 95%. Palladium is stronger and more scratch resistant than white gold. There is no difference in the coloring of the scratches as there is no plating to be rubbed off creating a difference in color.

What kinds of things are harmful to my white gold engagement ring?

Most people are under the mistaken impression that they should clean their jewelry with toothpaste. Do not use toothpaste! Use a toothbrush and warm (don’t boil your jewelry!) water with ammonia to clean the diamonds.
Nothing you’re likely to come in contact with will harm your white gold. Most white gold in the USA is alloyed with nickel and many people are allergic to nickel, but most white gold (in the states) is rhodium plated.
Rhodium is the most valuable and rare metal on earth. It is a platinum group metal and is very, very white. Since gold is a yellow metal, adding nickel makes it look whiter, but without rhodium plating it’ll always look yellowish. (10k is whiter than 14k which is whiter than 18k…10k is 47% gold, 14K is 58% gold and 18k is 75% gold)
If your ring isn’t rhodium plated, iodine can change its surface color. I’ve never been successful with liver of sulfur darkening any color gold.
